DESCRIPTION
Free-spirited, fun, and full of surprises—that’s the magic of Primitive Patchwork. This quilt invites you to set perfection aside and embrace the joy of improvisation. With its whimsical flexibility and varied block layouts, you’ll discover that the real beauty lies in the quirks, not the quarter-inch seams. Precision only comes into play when you trim your blocks and bring the whole piece together—until then, it’s all about freedom and play.
This is the very process I used to teach Hugo how to quilt. His very first quilt—made with Primitive Patchwork—was juried into both AQS Paducah and Quilt Festival Houston! That’s the power of letting go, diving in, and trusting the process.
Whether you're a beginner finding your rhythm or an experienced quilter craving creative freedom, Primitive Patchwork is for you. You can use bold contemporary prints, or aim for a classic Amish aesthetic—the possibilities are endless.
You’ll work through guided steps, post your progress, and receive personal feedback along the way. We’ll explore layout options, and you’ll design your own unique composition. The final size of the quilt is up to you—make a cozy wall hanging or a full-size quilt, depending on how many blocks you want to create. This is freeform quilting fun with a splash of precision when needed—and it just might become one of your favorites.

Supplies/Fabric
For this project, gather a playful mix of about 20–25 different fabrics. Fat quarters work just fine, or you can opt for ½-yard cuts if you prefer more wiggle room. Most of your fabrics should fall into the “medium” value range. Then, add just a few (2–4) light fabrics and a few darks—these can have a bit more yardage, such as ½ to 1 yard each.
Since your final quilt size will be determined by your personal layout, we can’t predict exact yardage needs. But don’t worry—that’s part of the charm! This quilt is meant to be whimsical and “make-do.” If you run out of a fabric midstream, it’s not a problem—it’s a plus! Finding creative fill-ins and unexpected solutions is exactly what gives Primitive Patchwork its character and soul.
Other than fabric, you’ll need general sewing supplies. Sewing machine, rotary cutter, mat, ruler, fabric marker (or pencil). You may find having graph paper on hand to be helpful, but not required.
