Squares and triangles have never been so fun!

Ricky’s dad, Richard, aka Papaw, was obsessed with making this block. He made no less than 30 full-size quilts using only this block. Who does that? His enjoyment of seeing “what would happen if” inspired him to explore various options.

Social media enthusiasm from seeing Papaw’s quilts has prompted Ricky to create a short, two-day interactive class. You will learn the tools to create your own version of Papaw’s Choice which can be as random or as planned as you like—making this truly a one-of-a-kind quilt that will fit everyone’s style, colors, and personality.  After the two days, you’ll have time to make your Papaw’s Choice quilt before the group reconvenes one last time and for the Final Showcase where everyone will share their version of Papaw’s Choice.

The cutting and sewing are basic and simple, making this project accessible to all quilters—beginners and experienced alike. Ricky will share his dad’s methods and offer suggestions for color placement. Your quilt can be as spontaneous as a roll of the dice, or structured and organized. A final showcase a few weeks after the two-day class will allow everyone so show their versions. You will get one-on-one guidance as needed during the class.

Ricky’s dad passed away in 2015 but his legacy lives on. Join Ricky and experience the magical possibilities that Papaw experienced on his quilting journey.

The pattern will be available in class when needed, but not before.

Supplies

Dad used 8 yards of fabric. In many cases it was eight one-yard pieces of hand-dyed fabrics. That amount of yardage is more than sufficient to make the body of the quilt. It is not wise to choose any fabrics prior to the start of class because a discussion of variations and coloration will be the first order of business. In most cases, I predict you will have fabric in your stash that will be suitable for your quilt. Regarding border fabrics, those too should wait until your quilt is well on its way, or you have finished sewing the body of your quilt.

Other than fabric, you’ll need general sewing supplies. Sewing machine, rotary cutter, mat, ruler, fabric marker (or pencil). You may find a set of colored pencils to be beneficial as well.
