Grand Convergence is the flagship method of Convergence quilts—a bold, dynamic approach to creating contemporary art quilts.
For the first time ever—either in person or online—I am presenting Grand Convergence as a class.
You will begin by creating an original free-form flowing design, using intuitive cutting as the foundation of your composition. From there, I’ll guide you through a specific set of principles as we slice, rearrange, and reassemble strips to transform that original design into a true Grand Convergence.
Finally, we’ll explore one of the elements that makes these quilts so distinctive: unique borders that become an integral part of the composition, blending seamlessly into the design rather than simply framing it.
The result is a quilt that is unmistakably a Convergence—but entirely your own.
Class Format
Please plan to set aside both days for creating. On the first day you will create the body of your quilt. On the second day, we’ll turn our attention to designing and constructing the borders that complete and integrate with your Grand Convergence design.
Naturally, some students work faster than others, but this two-day format generally provides more than enough time to complete your quilt top.
Each day will unfold in a comfortable rhythm of short instructional sessions followed by time for you to work independently. We’ll come back together for the next lesson, then return to our individual work—and continue that pattern throughout the day.
Along the way, you’ll upload progress photos so I can see what you’re doing and offer input and guidance. We’ll also share our work with one another, allowing everyone to see the incredible variety of designs developing throughout the class.
This makes Grand Convergence much more than simply watching an online class. It becomes an interactive weekend workshop and creative community, where we learn, work, share, and watch an amazing collection of original quilts come to life together.

Class is delivered via Zoom webinar format. You do not need special software. I won't see you, but you will see me. Each zoom session is recorded and posted for reviewing. It can take approximately 1 hour following the end of the session to be posted and available for review.
ALL SESSIONS ACCESSED FOREVER. You always have access to come back and review this class.
Photography
Photos showing each person's progress are shared. You will see the progress of your classmates and the individuality is inspiring. It will give insight as to they variations you might attempt in the future. All students see Ricky's comments and suggestions of submitted images/progress. This process is covered in the class.
A Grand Convergence works especially well with fabrics that shift and change across the surface. Look for fabrics with multicolored movement, subtle transitions, or ombré effects. They certainly do not need to be bright—what matters most is that there is some variation or movement within the fabric.
For some of the free-form “swoops” in your design, you may also want a more textured or near-solid fabric that pops against the surrounding fabrics. Contrast can be an important part of making these shapes come alive.
For our class project, we’ll keep the overall size manageable and relatively fabric-friendly.

You will not use the entire yard of each fabric. However, some of our initial free-form cutting requires larger pieces, so having a full yard available gives you the flexibility you’ll need.
As you make your selections, think less about fabrics that simply “match” and more about assembling a group that offers movement, contrast, and interesting transitions from one fabric to another.
